Even in the small town of Brixen it was very resounding when the elephant entered the town just before Christmas 1551.

His temporary destination: the “Haus zum hohen Felde”, a travelers' hostel. Over the centuries, it became the Hotel Elephant, known far beyond South Tyrol.

Via Innsbruck and Hall, over the Inn and Danube,
the pachyderm reached the capital Vienna in May 1552.
